Knee Brace Fact Sheet

So you're in the market for a knee brace. Before you venture to your local drug store to buy one, it's a good idea to know what's available out there. You may think a knee brace is a knee brace, but there are several different styles and models to choose from, depending on need. Some knee braces are designed to immobilize the knee joint, while others are merely designed for support.

For example, did you know that there are knee braces that are solid, called 'closed patella' braces, and 'open patella' braces? The patella, for those of you who aren't up on medical terminology, is just another term for kneecap. A knee brace can be nothing more than an elastic sleeve while others come with metal supports, magnets and straps. The most common type of knee brace is an elastic sleeve that is pulled on over the foot and then situated over the knee joint. This kind of knee brace is good for those who are on their feet all day, have slight muscle pulls or weakened joints due to arthritis or osteoporosis. A knee brace of this type usually runs between $10 and $20 at most medical supply or drug stores.

Compression support knee braces are also available, and extend six inches or more above and below the knee joint. These sleeves allow for movement while offering support for muscles of the knee joint and beyond. This type of knee brace also helps to prevent chaffing and pinching while improving blood circulation and relieving varicose veins. It also serves to warm the knee joint, which alleviates some symptoms of knee pain. This type of knee brace is anatomically designed to provide maximum comfort and fit. These usually run around $20 and can be purchased in medical supply stores.

A sport knee sleeve knee brace is meant to be worn during physical activity to offer additional support when playing basketball, baseball or football. This type of knee brace usually costs anywhere from $20 to $40. There is also what is known as a patella strap, and this type of knee brace comes in several different styles and types also. A patella strap is just what it sounds like. A strap, usually a couple of inches wide, is placed just below the knee joint. This type of knee brace provides pressure against one of two tendons in the knee, which serves to decrease stress or overload on the knee joint. This type of knee brace runs around $30 but can cost more or less depending on which style you choose and for which needs.

At times, a knee brace can come with or without magnets, support rods and padding. It's up to the individual to choose what's most comfortable, unless your physician has prescribed a specific knee brace for your knees. The fabrics that make up a knee brace can also differ between styles and need, and can include knitted, elastic or micro-fleece construction materials. So, depending on needs, a knee brace can and does provide a variety of options. The most basic kinds will be available at drug stores, but if you want something specific, it's better to visit a medical supply store for your knee brace needs.
